I have a law degree but did not pass bar. Is it worth it to get paralegal cert. for more $$?

Happy asked:

Legal assistant jobs don’t pay very much without a paralegal cert. and I have a family to support immediately. I also have very little “legal” experience besides summer internships while in law school. Please help!!!

Not too many people do pass the bar the first time they take it. Keep studying and working at it and you’ll pass. But, yeah, take a job for now.

Two different problems here. One, you failed the bar. (Very common, BTW, so don’t beat yourself up over it.) Two, you need income.

These are related problems only if you make them be. Get a job, any job. In your spouse is able to work, s/he should, too, for the short-term. (Since there are kids involved, maybe the caregiver can add one more, at an hourly rate?)

Instead of spending the money on a paralegal certificate to do a job that doesn’t pay well and for which you’re vastly overqualified, spend it on a bar preparation course. Enlist your family’s support by making sure you have study time.

    Good luck!
