Is a Diploma for a Legal Secretary enough or should I have a Associate degree for the better positions?

Cheryl B asked:

I went to school for a Medical Assistant in 2006 but found out that it is not for me. I realize that health care is the place to be for employment. I have always been good in computers and believe that I would be great as a secretary and noticed that they make great money starting out with 30k. Should I go to school for 12 months and get a diploma or consider getting a Associates Degree.
I am currently not working in the medical field and did not get the experience needed to be hired immeadiatly. I would like to comment on my second answer given to me regarding jobs paying 30k. I have found many employers paying different amounts from $8 to 30k a year. I am aware that it will depend on my place of employment but was also looking at the opportunity to make 30k and more. They are out there and I noticed that they want a person to have 2 to 5 years experience in the legal field. I am in a bad situation and really don’t know which way to turn.

You really don’t need any type of diploma or degree to be a legal secretary. If you are good in computers, especially Microsoft Word, then your value as a legal secretary is tops. The pay is relatively higher than any other type of secretary but it also depends on what region of the country you live in. If you are interested in finding out more about what’s involved in being a legal secretary from the perspective of someone who’s “been there, done that” for 27 years, you may want to buy my ebook “Do You Have What it Takes to be a Legal Secretary? An Insightful Guide into the Legal Profession” available through my blog.

A “Diploma” in the field of Law isn’t worth the paper it is printed on.

Employers in the field of Law (usually law firms) want employees with Bachelors degrees, no less. An “Associates” won’t do it.

Legal Secretaries do NOT make 30K - if they can not even find a job! The jobs just are NOT there in this field! (WHO told you they make 30k? I would like to apply for this job.)

Warning! Jobs in the field of Law are drying up FAST!! This is NOT a good field to invest in! Many reasons. Main reason? We simply have WAY TOO MANY Legal Professionals - we have a GLUT! (”Legal Professionals” includes, but is not limited to: Attorneys/Lawyers, Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc)

Reconsider the field of HEALTHCARE! < This is where the jobs are! IF you want a job when you are done with your studies, that is.
