No experience as a legal assistant.how do I get an entry level job?

☆ vNy ☆ asked:

I have worked for medical doctors for over 14 years. Anyway, I wanted to change gears and work in the legal field as a paralegal. I notice that many legal assistant jobs require prospective employees to have at least one year experience. How do I get my foot in the door with no experience? I’m not expecting to get a very high paying job in a major corporation just yet. I already have an idea as to where I want my career to go and where I see myself working after graduation but I just don’t see many opportunities for people without legal experience, like me. I am beginning classes in January to work towards an Associate’s Degree.

I think your best chance is going to some law schools around your area and trying to contact either teachers, students who are already working and telling them what you want.
I think that even your school and the fact that you will be studying in january will help you to put a foot in a legal firm in an easier way.

27 years ago, I interviewed for a legal secretary position. Now I am a legal assistant and office manager. I had no legal background, but did have LOTS of secretarial background as well as accounting. If you are a fast learner, good at details, proof your own work and take initiative at work to learn everything you can, you will do good at whatever career you choose.

You just have to start out at the bottom, as a legal secretary, receptionist, or clerk. Work at a law office while you get your associates in paralegal studies. This way, when you graduate you will have law office experience which will help you land a paralegal job, or you can try to get promoted at the law office you already work at.
