Need help with a legal assistant resume. Still in college?

Desiree asked:

I need some help putting together a resume and cover letter for a career as a legal assistant. I’m currently going to college to obtain my associates in legal assisting technology, and I would like some experience in the field prior to receiving my degree. What should this type of resume look like, and how much do entry level paralegal positions typically pay?

It is near impossible to find an entry level paralegal position especially with out having finished your degree. Even once you graduate, you won’t have any law office experience and that is what matters more. I suggest looking for entry level jobs, don’t be suprised if you don’t find any, you might have to start off as a legal secretary.

I have my degree in paralegal studies and I had to start as a legal secretary because after a year of searching for a paralegal job I couldn’t find a firm that would hire me without any experience (and I graduated with a 4.0 and highest distinction with recommendations from judges and top lawyers)!

As far as your resume goes, when listing previous employment, list any duties that you had that would help you in a paralegal position. Make sure to include your schooling, degree, GPA, and expected graduation date.

    Good luck to you!
